In The Vineyard
Due
to the drought we’ve experienced these past 2 years,
only 5 tonnes of Shiraz was picked on the 30th of April 2003.
The yield was quite low but the quality, body and alcohol will
prove to be quite high.
In Harry’s block the award wining Shiraz vines were stressed with the tendrils having browned, dried& dropped off and the shoot terminals having arrested their growth.
We had instigated different watering patterns to sections of the Shiraz to achieve consistency throughout.
The uniform growth and colour was very pleasing – the patch appeared uniform and the leaves seemed uniformly greener this year. Overall the vines looked the best ever so far.
Netting and a bird scarring devices was installed this year to protect the vines from possible bird damage.
In the Cottage block on the other side of the dam, where we have our Cabernet and Merlot, we accelerated the training of the young vines by removing grapes and extra trunks. We could have picked some Cabernet and Merlot this year but we forego this to concentrate on new vine growth, which will put us in good stead for the future.
The Cabernet and Merlot blocks will be picked in 2004 which will not only increase the range of Estate grown reds but also allow for various blends (such as Cabernet/Merlot) to be produced.
The existing Shiraz block will be extended another acre as indicated by the pine posts already in place.
