Penguin Guide 2007Big Hill Vineyard Merlot
The Bendigo gold rush led to the planting of a number of vineyards to slake the diggers’ insatiable thirst, but the dreaded phylloxera bug and efforts to eradicate it led to their demise in late-Victorian time. Today many vineyards have been replanted on the same sites as those pioneering plantings, and Big Hill is one of them.

2004
An emphatic young merlot, deeply pigmented, with intense stewed-plum and raspberry-fruit character and a leafy varietal touch. The palate is well-concentrated with mint, plum and spice-like varietal fruit, medium body and firm tannins. Serve it with lamb’s fry and bacon.

James Halliday 2007Bendigo Merlot 2004
Deep colour; lots of rich and juicy blackcurrant fruit giving a supple mouthfeel; not particularly varietal, but that hardly matters.

Bendigo Shiraz 2003
An elegant, medium-bodied wine reflecting the controlled alcohol; blackberry and raspberry fruit supported by fine tannins and oak.

Bendigo Cabernet Sauvignon 2004
Slightly dull colour; tannins take hold early in the mouth, and don’t loosen their grip, though there is good fruit underneath.
